Application Process

  1. To create an account, go to "User Registration"; in the top menu bar.
  2. To log in to your account, go to "Login" in the top menu bar.
  3. To register for an exam, go to "Create Application" in the top menu bar.
  4. Select exam (paperwork is required for most exams). Click "Confirm."
  5. Upload paperwork; click "OK or Save Application."
  6. Click "Schedule" exam-online or in-person. Online exams have minimum computer requirements and need to be accessed via a desktop or laptop computer.
  7. "Exam Session Payment"-pay for exam (Core and Category $135; Private $50); same fees apply to reregister
  8. FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

Paperwork Requirements for the Core Exam

CORE EXAM - The Basic Pesticide Training Class Completion Certificate OR A current Pesticide Operator License OR a recently expired Pesticide Applicator License.

  1. You do not need to take the "Basic Pesticide Training Class" if you are taking exams for recertification AND it has been less than two (2) years since your license expired (see Attention Recertification Applicants in Step 2 below). If you have not been licensed for two consecutive years or more, you must take the "Basic Pesticide Training Class" again.
  2. Attention Recertification Applicants: If you are taking the exam for recertification purposes, and it has been less than two years since your license expired, you do not need to resubmit the "Basic Pesticide Training Class Attendance Certificate." Instead, you have the option to submit the certificate OR prepare a digital copy/picture of your expired Commercial Pesticide Applicator license.See the NJDEP website https://www.state.nj.us/dep/enforcement/pcp/bpo-examsignup.htm for more details on exam requirements.

Paperwork Requirements for the Category Exam

CATEGORY EXAM - One of the following must be completed prior to taking Category exams:

  • Category Training Verification Form: Complete 40 hours of "On-The-Job-Training" (OTJ) for each category. Have the licensed Commercial Pesticide Applicator who trained you fill out and sign the Category Training Verification Form.
  • NOTE: OJT is always required for Category 11: Aerial. However, if all applications will be done aerially, additional categories do not require OJT. Categories 10 and 13 are exempt from Category Training Requirements.
  • If 40 hours of on-the-job training is not available, see Option A OR Option B listed below.
    • Option A: Complete a Category Training Course: For Categories 3A, 3B, 7A, 7B or 8B you must take a department approved Category Training Course from a certified trainer. You will receive the Category Course Attendance Certificate from the course.
    • Option B: Category Training Verification Form: For categories other than 3A, 3B, 7A, 7B, 8B or 11 and you cannot get OJT, complete the Category Training Verification Form with an explanation of why you cannot obtain OTJ training.
  • Affidavit Form - if you have been previously licensed in the category you are applying to take the exam, complete the Affidavit Form affirming that you have the required 1-year of work experience.

What Happens Next

  1. Applications are reviewed every 1-2 business days. An email will be sent with the status of your application.
  2. Approved for an online exam: two emails will be sent, one from PACER (pacer@njaes.rutgers.edu) with instructions and one from Canvas (notifications@instructure.com) with an invitation to the testing site.
  3. Approved for in-person exam: one email will be sent with exam day instructions.
  4. Declined for an exam: one email will be sent with an explanation.
  5. ONLINE EXAMS ARE HOSTED IN CANVAS; THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE SCHEDULED; THEY ARE AVAILABLE 24/7.
  6. Grades will be posted on your PACER dashboard 7-10 business days from exam submission. Results will be sent to the NJDEP within two weeks.
  7. The NJDEP will then generate an invoice that you can pay online (see "Resources" in the top menu bar for instructions). An invoice will also be mailed to you.
  8. Once the invoice is paid the NJDEP will mail you your license.

What You Need To Know

  1. ONLINE EXAM:
    1. Online exams are hosted in Canvas, a learning management system.
    2. PLEASE READ the minimum computer requirements needed to take an online exam. Click here for requirements
    3. Once approved for online exams, you can take them at your convenience, 24/7.
    4. Exams are timed. You have 2 hours to complete the exam.
    5. Failure to comply with the Rules and Regulations provided in Canvas, including performing a room scan before the exam starts, will prevent your exam from being graded.
  2. IN-PERSON EXAM:
    1. Arrive 30 minutes before the exam start time.
    2. All exams are CLOSED book.
    3. Calculators (not cell phone calculators) and a magnifying glass are permitted.
    4. Study materials, books, paper, bags, backpacks, purses etc. are NOT permitted in the testing room.
    5. CELL PHONES are NOT permitted in testing room.
    6. You have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the exam.
  3. EXAM FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

Business Manager Account
